  • Q
What do you hope to accomplish when you are elected chairman of CSIA in May 2013?
    A
It’s an exciting time to be involved with CSIA. We’re evolving from a relatively small community into a global association with increasing influence. We want to be the center of the system integration universe and to do so we need to focus on three things. The first is to continue to increase the value we deliver to our system integrator members. The second is to educate our members’ clients – the manufacturing community – of the value of CSIA, and CSIA Certification, in particular. Finally, in order to truly be the center of the SI universe, we need to expand globally so we can serve integrators, manufacturers and our partners wherever they are in the world.
  • Q
In your opinion, what is the biggest challenge facing the automation marketplace today and in the future?
    A
Manufacturers continue to outsource system integration, which is great for us. But this also means that every day there are fewer engineers in the plants, and therefore fewer automation professionals with hands-on plant experience. So, this source of talent continues to diminish, and we think the organizations that win will be the ones who establish programs to develop young talent. Training people with new technologies has never been a challenge. Instead, the greatest challenge (and opportunity) is to develop application and process knowledge among people who’ve never worked in a plant.
  • Q
How has Avid Solutions grown or changed in the past year and what do you expect for your company in the next 12 to 24 months?
    A
Each of our three United States offices has grown this year. But the biggest change has been our expansion into Brazil. A lot of personal connections, as well as the economic opportunity, led us to acquire SPA Automação, a CSIA member company located near the city of São Paulo. SPA has developed quickly since its founding three years ago and was looking for a partner to help with expansion in the process industries. These factors and SPA's matching values and culture made it a great fit for Avid Solutions. Our goal is to become the premier Brazilian system integrator focused on process industries.

We are pursuing and starting to execute joint projects with our offices in the U.S. In addition, we have been contacted by multiple CSIA members in the U.S. that are interested in collaborating with Avid Solutions These integrators have clients based here asking them to execute projects at their operations in Brazil. We think our Brazilian team is a great fit to provide some of the local start-up, commissioning and support activities.
  • Q
You are president of Avid Solutions. Tell us how you got started in the business of control system integration.
    A
My wife and I were engineers at Motorola – not directly involved in system integration – when her father convinced us to join Avid Solutions. That was 16 years ago. I can say that it was one of the best decisions we’ve made.
  • Q
What is the biggest benefit of CSIA membership for Avid Solutions?
    A
Without a doubt, we’ve gained the most by learning from others in our industry. The best avenues that I’ve found have been CSIA Certification, peer groups, the executive conference and committee participation.
