In July 2010, ThyssenKrupp AG, among the world’s largest steel producers, opened one of the industry’s most advanced carbon steel processing facilities – ThyssenKrupp Steel USA – to serve high-value markets in the Americas. Costing $5 billion and located about 40 miles north of Mobile, Alabama, the 1,800-employee plant can produce 4.3 million metric tons a year of flat rolled carbon steel products. Its facilities include a hot strip mill, cold rolling mill, four hot-dip galvanizing lines, rail yard and a river terminal to access the Port of Mobile and Gulf of Mexico. One of the key contractors for the ThyssenKrupp project is Mobile-based Prism Systems, Inc., a Siemens Solution Provider. Founded in 1989, it serves a global customer base, mostly Fortune 500 companies, delivering solutions in the areas of automation and controls as well as industrial software development, data integration and reporting, engineering consulting, and project management.

In heavy industry worldwide, bridge cranes provide the lifting capacity to hoist tons of materials at a time, whether those are going into production, moving through a process stage, or coming out, ready for shipment. With such massive loads in their grip – often moving high above a factory or warehouse floor – crane control and safety are critical. Slips, bumps and drops can cause costly disruptions and inflict irreparable damage to equipment and infrastructure. Consequently, accidents like these can have grave impact on nearby personnel.

Oil and gas operators still using Siemens SIMATIC S5 controllers could be missing out on the many digitalization capabilities and benefits of the more modern SIMATIC S7 controller technology, in particular the S7-1200 and S7-1500 controllers. Enhancements include faster execution speeds, more compact sizes, integrated security and safety features, greater scalability and improved communications and diagnostics. The TIA Portal, a common software engineering framework, can cut development times as much as 30 percent. By migrating to the SIMATIC S7 platform, oil and gas operators can gain new efficiencies, cost-savings, more operating visibility, a sharper competitive edge and, ultimately, improved profitability.
